Water in the Time of Coronavirus | The Groundwater Treatment System
The necessity for clean drinking water is increasing rapidly. Over the past 5 years, Caminos de Agua has developed a Groundwater Treatment System to remove toxic levels of arsenic and fluoride from community water supplies.
This system will have the potential to provide tens of thousands of people with clean drinking water – substantially quicker and less expensively than alternatives.
Water in the Time of Coronavirus | The Story of Juana
Juana Reyes Bocanegra and her family live in the ranching community of La Luz located in a remote area between San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo. Having been born and raised there, she is keenly aware that community members have always battled for access to the dwindling supply of water.
Caminos de Agua is working with Juana and her family – as well as 10 other families – right now to get this rainwater system built as quickly as possible. Having the new supply of water from the rainwater system is going to make the critical difference between being at serious risk and doing what it takes to minimize the threat.
Consuming the Future
Consuming the Future is a short documentary about groundwater over-exploitation due to the export agriculture business in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico where San Miguel de Allende is located. This film illustrates the inequity of water distribution in the state and the impacts the over-extraction of groundwater resources has on local communities.
This documentary was produced by long-time Caminos de Agua collaborator, Dr. Jaime Hoogesteger from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Caminos de Agua provided water quality data for the documentary, and Caminos’ Community Projects Coordinator, Saúl Juarez, along with various community partners, are featured throughout the film.
